Quantum coherence and quantum entanglement are two sides of the same coin

quantum coherence and quantum entanglement are two sides of the same coin

Quantum coherence and quantum entanglement are two landmark features of quantum physics, and now physicists have demonstrated that the two phenomena are "operationally equivalent"—that is, equivalent for all practical purposes, though still conceptually distinct. This finding allows physicists to apply decades of research on entanglement to the more fundamental but less-well-researched concept of coherence, offering the possibility of advancing a wide range of quantum technologies.

"Measuring Quantum Coherence with Entanglement"
http://arxiv.org/abs/1502.05876

The fascination with quantum entanglement has evolved over the last eight decades, from the realm of philosophical debate[1]toaveryconcreterecognitionofitsresourcerolein a range of applied sciences [2]. While considerable progress has been achieved in the detection of entanglement [3], its full quantification in general states is almost always unfeasible[4,5]. Quantifyingentanglementisyetnecessarytogauge precisely the quantum enhancement in information processingandcomputation[2],andtopindownexactlyhowmucha physical or biological system under observation departs from an essentially classical behaviour [6]. This is especially relevant in the case of complex, multiparticle systems, for which only quite recently have notable advances been reported both on the experimental control [7–10] as well as on the theoretical classification [11–16] and, in very few cases, quantification [17–23] of specific forms of entanglement. An intuitive framework for classifying and quantifying the degree of multiparticle entanglement relies on a geometric perspective [24–26].

http://arxiv.org/pdf/1511.08346v1.pdf
The basis of any quantum resource theory are free states and free operations, these are states and operations which can be created or performed at no cost. In the resource theory of quantum coherence free states are states which are diagonal in a fixed reference basis. This choice is natural in manyexperimentalscenarioswherethereferencebasisiss ingledoutbytheunavoidabledecoherence. The corresponding free operations are called incoherent, they can be implemented as a generalized measurement which does not create any coherence. However, a general quantum operation admits different experimental realizations, and a quantum operation which seems incoherent in one experimental realization might create coherence in another. Starting from this observation, we propose the framework of genuine quantum coherence. This approach is based on a simple principle: we demand that a genuinely incoherent operation preservesall incoherent states. This simple condition automaticallyguaranteesthattheoperationisincoheren tregardlessoftheparticularexperimentalrealization. Amongotherresultsweintroduceandstudythetaskofincoh erentremotestatepreparation and compare our approach to the framework of quantum thermodynamics and the resource theory of asymmetry. Remarkably, we also show that the Hilbert-Schmidt distance to the set of incoherent states isa faithful measureof genuinecoherence.

Summary
Discord can be quantified by the minimum entanglement created with an apparatus during a premeasurement
Coherence can be quantified by the maximum entanglement created by incoherent operations
--- Discord can be interpreted and quantified in terms of bipartite coherence minimized over all local bases for subsystem

Knack und back.

(Coherence=maximum entanglement "with" incoherent ancilla; Discord=bipartite coherence minimized over all local bases for subsystem) Deshalb mal kein neuer FRED.

Only for INFO

Zitat:

• Every N-qubit state can be reduced to a GHZ-diag state by a LOCC operation
• The geometric quantities evaluated before give exact lower bounds to the
genuine multipartite entanglement of arbitrary N-qubit states
• These can be accessed experimentally by measuring the overlap with a
reference GHZ state, which requires N+1 local measurements [Guhne et al 2007]
• The bounds can be optimised by local unitary operations prior to the LOCC
Einfach phantastisch ... .
